The nervous system of Changeling species is largely similar to those found in Ponies with one particular distinction: It requires moderate to high amount of stimulus to stay active and function properly. Any stimulus will suffice; positive, neutral, negative are proven to elicit the same effects on the Central Nervous System (CNS) keeping it active and promoting conscious control over individual actions and reflexes. This state, often called “Sane”¹ for short, widely accepted as psychological baseline for changeling species.

In an absence of suitable stimulus, and given enough time, certain parts of the CNS will begin to lose its activity and ability to inhibit and control so-called “reflexive behavior”. Individuals in this state often exercise violent tendencies, display difficulty concentrating on task at hand and recalling facts. Should exposure to this state continue individual will lose all behavioral patterns tied to a social behavior, become aggressive and unpredictable, exhibit impaired higher nervous activity.

This state, named “Feral”² because violent tendencies³, is theorized to be the baseline for the Changeling species millennia ago. It is now treated as non normal behavior, and individuals exhibiting this state are considered to require urgent help. Individuals exposed to this state for prolonged period may experience permanent loss of nervous functions tied to social behavior and conscious thought.

Currently only 5% of individuals were successfully treated and recovered from this state. More effective treatment methods are currently in development.

Modern changeling society revolves around the idea of fostering connections, companionship, and mutual help. From early childhood special programs are in place to educate the populace and promote knowledge regarding early symptoms and help strategies for individuals and groups alike.

³ Violent tendencies are not limited to the Pony species. A “Feral” individual will perceive their “Sapient” counterpart as a prey as well.
